Description
The paint on the sash of the jumper depicts a Wangka (dance) from my people, the Marri Amu clan of the Moil River floodplains and the Marri Tjevin clan from the coastal areas.
The Wangka tells the story of Elders calling out to their ancestors to protect and guide people while on Country. It represents looking after each other and looking after family. At Richmond, Punt Road is our spiritual home where we look out for and protect one another. It is fitting that the sash represents my family’s historical guidance and sanctuary of one another.
The Merrepen leaf that features throughout the design is used to make woven dilly-bags, fishing nets and other fibre-craft products. There are 42 leaves in the design that represent each Richmond player on the list. Together, they connect to create something strong.
The Dugong image is depicted outside of the sash this is a totem of my Larrakia family, on my great, great grandmother’s side. It represents our link to the sea which surrounds my home of Darwin.
